Level IV

Level IV is the most independent and creatively productive year of CACW.

This course of study is for seniors who have already completed Level III and all academic requirements for the certificate of artistry. Successful completion of the final requirements for Certificate of Artistry in Creative Writing:

  • Writing and revising work to produce a creative thesis of at least 25 pages, and defending the thesis with the creative writing chair and a qualified reader chosen by the faculty.

  • Designing a thesis plan which includes a schedule of writing goals and critical studies project that relates to the students’ interests in writing and literature.

  • Producing a senior project, aligned with the student’s interests and their other Level IV requirements, involving focused research on a literary/artistic topic and culminating in a critical essay, a creative product, and a presentation at the senior recital.

  • Formally presenting a selection of the thesis as the senior recital.

Level IV students are responsible for the readings, writing assignments, and other work of the upper level curriculum. Upon satisfactorily completing the Level IV requirements, the student will be recommended by the faculty to receive the Certificate of Artistry in Creative Writing.
