Introduction to Poetry Writing
English 222 - Spring 2016
Workshop - 50%
Every other week you will submit one poem for critique and one critical response to a peer’s poem. Both poem and critique must be typed and printed (2 copies of critique and 9/11 copies of poems). You must also participate in the online workshop for our class by posting a poem each week and responding to two of your peers' poems by Friday's class.
Reading Responses - 15%
500-word responses to assigned class readings are due weekly. These responses should analyze the reading and note your thinking on specific passages. They must be posted to Blackboard (as a journal entry) by the start of class each Monday.
Participation - 20%
Your enthusiasm and energy in workshop and class discussion is vital to your grade, as well as your development as a writer. Please be present and ready to be workshopped on the days for which you are scheduled.
Final Portfolio - 15%
This includes revised versions of all of the pieces of writing you turn in to workshop, as well as a selection of 3-5 poems you feel Mark Doty or Mary Oliver would publish, and a 500 word statement explaining just why he or she would be impressed by these poems.
